 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As long as cabins are available you can join us on Adventure 41 over Labor Day week (August 31 to September 7, 2008) onboard the Caribbean Princess.  We will be doing walks in Halifax, Nova Scotia; St. John, New Brunswick, Boston, and Newport.  The ship will also stop in Bar Harbor, Maine. If 4 walks aren’t enough (and you’re a fast walker) Halifax and Boston each have 3 walks you can do.

In Boston we will walk the Freedom Trail,  relive Revolutionary War history and have a lobster roll in Faneuille Hall.  In Newport we do the cliff walk and see the magnificent mansions of the wealthy.  In St. John, learn the history of the three sisters. (They are lights.) Nearby is the Bay of Fundy with the highest tides in the world as well as a river which reverses its flow daily. While in Halifax, a Scottish city, learn its relationship to the Titanic (and also those diverted planes after 9/11). While in Bar Harbor you can go up Cadillac mountain and see where the sun first shines in the USA.

The ship holds 3100 people and features the Scholars at Sea program. When not walking, you can take courses in everything from cooking to ceramics to photography to computers. The ship leaves from Brooklyn, New York.  There is parking at the pier, transfers from the New York airports, or take the bus directly to the pier.  Buses start at Washington, D.C., Boston, Mass, and Harrisburg, Pa (They will pick up people at major cities on the way.)   If interested in joing us, phone or e-mail Matt (see below).

Need your advice.  Was originally planning an Adventure to the Chicago area over Columbus Day weekend.  There are no special walks that weekend in the area.  An alternative is a trip to NYC where for the first and only time there will be walks in all 5 boroughs.  This would be a Saturday to Tuesday trip to cover all the events. Propose we go by Megabus (cheap) and stay at the Carter Hotel near Times Square (also reasonable). We will use public transportation in NYC. We could add on a nice dinner and theatre event. What is your preference? (If we do NYC then we will go to Chicago at a different time.)

Also will have an Adventure to the IVV Olympiad in Japan.  The IML walk in Dalian China is scheduled for the same weekend.  Should Dalian change to the weekend before, plan on doing both countries with a side trip to see the terra cotta warriors. Trip is in mid May 2009.

We are still offering a discount whenever you rent a car from AVIS.  Our Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number is Q050308.  If a lower rate is available at the time of reservation, you may choose that “over-the-counter” rate and enjoy a 5% discount on daily rates or a minimum of 10% off the weekly and weekend rates.

Anyone for a trip to Disneyland/Universal Studios and a few YRE’s in the L.A. area?  Yes we can sightsee on the Venice Boardwalk.  Please let Matt know if you are interested in anything else.

Please, please, please speak up as to where, when, how long, how expensive, how much road time, etc you want in your Adventures.  If you don’t speak up then I’ll only hear from the vocal people, and most of those do not participate in the Adventures.  Write, e-mail, or phone day (703) 312-3320, eve (703) 620-5892, cell (703) 980-0392,  e-mail matt@thebadpennies.org or  snail mail The Bad Pennies; P.O. Box 2393; Merrifield, Virginia 22116-2393.

If you have a new e-mail address, or home or work phone numbers, please let us know.

We are also still looking to purchase small transportable gifts to give other clubs that help us by putting on walks and hosting us.  Any suggestions would be welcomed.  We used the White House Christmas ornament as gifts on a previous Adventure.

If you received a dues notice with this newsletter, please do not procrastinate.  We really do not want to lose you.

The U.S. Surgeon General suggests 30 minutes of daily moderate activity (above and beyond standard activity).  That translates roughly into 3,000 to 4,000 extra steps a day. We normally walk about 5,000 to 6,000 steps in a day, so if you add 3,000 to 4,000 steps to that, you’re at 10,000 steps a day – a level of activity that can help prevent weight gain, lower “bad” cholesterol and reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure.  Most people who are walking fewer than 5,000 steps a day are gaining weight and losing muscle, researchers say.  30 minutes of walking per day can prevent weight gain in most people who are physically inactive, according to a Duke University study.  The recommended 30 minutes of walking a day doesn’t have to be done all at once.  The same benefit is gained in 10 minute increments, say researchers at  Arizona’s Walking Research Lab.

TIPS FOR DAY HIKERS

1.  Prepare.  Be prepared for sudden changes of weather, getting lost or injury.  Pack essentials.  Bring a cell phone.  Carry a compass and know how to use it.  Have a rain poncho. Dress in layers.

Carry plenty of water.  Wear proper shoes or hiking boots. Don’t forget food, maps, moleskin for blisters, sunscreen and toilet paper.

2.  Know your abilities.  Don’t attempt more than you are capable of.  People in poor physical shape need not avoid walking, but they should stick to easy trails close to civilization.

3.  Hike with a partner.  Hiking alone can be dangerous if you become injured and unable to walk.  In remote areas it’s best to hike with at least four; if one person is injured, two can find help while one stays behind.

4.  Tell People Your Destination.  Let someone know where you will be hiking and when you expect to return.  Plan to call at a designated time; if call is not received local authorities can be alerted that you may be lost or hurt.

A MESSAGE

FROM YOUR EDITOR

The year seems to be flying by, I hope you have been able to do a lot of walking.  The heat and humidity makes it difficult in July and August, but early morning YREs are a good choice

If you haven’t walked Richmond, the Virginia state capitol walk yet, you are missing an excellent walk.  The walk goes by the newly remodeled Capitol Building as well as along the floodwall and through the Medical College of Virginia Commonwealth University.

After your walk, have lunch on the veranda of Legend Brewery.

These months are also a good time to walk the many state parks and fill up your Walking State Parks in the USA Program.

Hope to see you on the trail!

                                     Dee
